Abbaye de Valmagne

Abbaye de Valmagne

Founded in 1139, Valmagne Abbey is a Cistercian abbey and home to one of the oldest wine estates in the Languedoc. Its rich history spans periods of both turmoil and prosperity. The abbey endured the Hundred Years’ War and the French Wars of Religion, including a massacre of its monks in 1575. From the 12th century to the early 14th century, however, it flourished as one of the wealthiest Cistercian abbeys in southern France. Since 1838, Valmagne Abbey has been passed down through successive generations of the Gaudart d’Allaines family, descendants of the Count of Turenne. Listed as a French Historic Monument in 1947, it has welcomed visitors since 1975.
